LHR Underarms: Aftercare Rules for the First 72 Hours

By Healthydermis MedSpa and Laser Clinic - Oakton | October 27, 2026

Most important rule: For the first 72 hours after your underarms laser treatment, keep the area cool, clean, and low-friction. That means no heavy sweating, no hot tubs or saunas, and go easy on deodorant. It’s a quick 15-minute service in our Oakton office, but those first few days matter for calm skin and smooth results.

LHR Underarms: Aftercare Rules for the First 72 Hours image

Underarm laser hair removal targets the follicle with focused light. Because we’re working at the follicle level, your aftercare isn’t complicated, but it does need to be consistent. We wrote this for our Oakton clients who want clear rules that fit real schedules, including commute days, meetings, and weekend plans. Save it to your phone and follow it session after session.

First 24 to 48 hours after lasering underarms: keep it cool and quiet

Right after laser hair underarm, mild redness, warmth, or a slightly “sunburned” feeling is common. Think calm, not aggressive. The underarm is a high-friction area, so your goal is to prevent rubbing and avoid anything that traps heat.

Your 48-hour checklist

  • Use a cool compress for 5 to 10 minutes at a time if you feel heat or sting.
  • Cleanse gently in the shower with lukewarm water. Skip hot showers the first day if you can.
  • Avoid deodorant for at least 24 hours. If you’re still pink or sensitive, wait closer to 48 to 72 hours.
  • No sauna, steam room, hot yoga, or hot tub. Heat plus friction tends to trigger irritation.
  • Wear a loose, breathable top. Tight seams and lace edges rub more than people realize.

In Oakton, humidity can sneak up on you and turn a normal errand run into a sweaty afternoon. If you’re treated on a humid day, be extra strict about heavy sweating and friction for the first 48 to 72 hours. In fall and winter, many clients find it’s simply easier to stay cool on commute days.

One more important rule: don’t pluck or wax between sessions. Laser needs the follicle in place to do its job. If you need to tidy up, shaving is the safe option.

Days 3 to 7: the under arms laser treatment rules people forget

Once the initial heat settles, most people feel “back to normal.” That’s the moment we see the most accidental irritation. You feel fine, then you exfoliate, switch deodorants, or hit an intense workout, and the underarms flare up.

Skip exfoliation and acids for 7 days

For one full week, keep scrubs, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, retinoids, and “brightening” pads away from the treated area. Also skip dry brushing directly on the underarms. These products can be great, just not right on top of freshly treated skin.

Watch friction during workouts

We generally recommend holding off on heavy exercise for 48 to 72 hours. After that, ease back in and pay attention to rubbing from sports bras, tight tank tops, and repetitive arm motion. If you get a rash-like irritation, it’s usually friction plus sweat. Take a rest day, keep the area cool, and keep product simple.

Busy schedule tip: Our Oakton location along the Hunter Mill Road corridor makes it easy to stop by before you head toward Tysons or a Wolf Trap evening. If something looks “off, ” a fast look beats guessing at home.

Deodorant, showers, and shaving after laser hair underarm: simple rules

The underarm is where aftercare gets practical fast. You still have to live your life. Here’s how we approach the most common questions in the first 72 hours.

Deodorant

Avoid alcohol-based or heavy antiperspirants with aluminum for at least 24 hours, and often closer to 48 to 72 hours if you’re sensitive. When you restart, keep it gentle and fragrance-free if possible. If it stings, stop and give it another day.

Showers

A lukewarm shower the same day is usually fine. Keep cleansers mild, rinse well, and pat dry. Avoid hot water, steam, and prolonged heat exposure for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Shaving

You can shave between appointments, but give your skin a little time. If you’re still tender, wait 24 to 48 hours before shaving. Use a clean razor and a simple, non-fragranced shave product to reduce irritation.

Laser addresses growth differently than shaving or waxing, and many people notice less day-to-day irritation once growth is reduced. That’s one reason LHR Underarms is such a popular first booking in our Oakton clinic.

Products and habits that protect underarms laser treatment results

After laser, think fragrance-free and non-comedogenic. Simple usually wins. If you have a go-to soothing gel or basic moisturizer that never irritates you, this is the time to use it.

  • Cool compresses for short intervals if you feel heat.
  • Gentle cleanser in the shower, no scrubs.
  • Fragrance-free moisturizer or soothing aloe, applied with clean hands.
  • Loose clothing for a couple days, especially in Oakton’s humid stretches.

A note on “ingrowns”: When hair starts to shed, it can look like new growth. Don’t pick. Don’t dig. Let the shedding happen on its own, and keep the skin calm.

Normal vs. concerning after underarm laser treatment, and when to call us

Our team has been caring for Oakton, Vienna, Fairfax, Reston, Merrifield, Tysons, and Dunn Loring clients for 17 years. And one thing we’ve learned is simple: you shouldn’t have to guess. If something worries you, we want to hear from you.

Usually normal

  • Mild redness or warmth for a few hours, sometimes up to a day or two
  • A bit of swelling around follicles
  • Temporary sensitivity when applying product or moving your arms

Call us promptly

  • Blistering, crusting, or severe pain
  • Spreading rash, pus, or increasing tenderness that suggests infection
  • Pigment changes or swelling that doesn’t improve after a few days

Need a quick reset? If your underarms feel irritated, stop deodorant, avoid heat and workouts, and use a cool compress. Then reach out. A small tweak in the first few days can prevent a bigger problem later.
